A crown prosecutor has moved to withdraw charges against Picton Terminals.
That’s according to a report from The Toronto Star on Friday.
In their reporting, The Star says that a crown prosecutor with the Ministry of Natural Resources would be intervening in a private prosecution saying that there was not a reasonable prospect of a conviction in the case.
The two companies that operate Picton Terminals had each faced one charge of operating a quarry without a licence from the province, and accused of illegally excavating more than one million tonnes of limestone from its property on Picton Bay.
The maximum penalty for the charge would have been $1 million, plus additional penalties, including returning any profits made during any illegal operation.
The decision to withdraw the charges comes only a few months after a justice of the peace ruled in favour of a private prosecution application to move forward.
Both companies have denied the allegations.
