Belleville City Council approved increasing impound fees paid by animal owners to support the Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward (HSHPE) at its meeting Monday.
The impound fees are currently $52 (plus $25 for each subsequent offence) to a maximum of $100.
The new impound fees will be $100 (plus $25 for each subsequent offence) plus a $25 daily care fee for the extent of the five-day redemption period.
Officials with the Humane Society have been appearing in front of local councils recently saying they’ve been dealing with a tough financial situation due to rising demands for its services and lagging revenues.
The decision to increase fees comes to council is a result of a report finding that the city’s fees are below average compared to other municipalities.
Staff say that in 2024, 44 animals were reclaimed during the redemption period, which totalled $2,288 based on the current impound fee.
