A group representing Canadian manufacturing companies is looking at the impact that Trump’s tariffs are having on manufacturing jobs in Ontario, especially in eastern Ontario.
In a report published on Thursday, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters says that hiring in the field has stalled. They also found that 40% of manufacturers postponed investment projects.
A total of 28% of manufacturers froze hiring, while 28% began seeking alternative markets.
While the tariffs were noted as one cause for the difficulties, the report also points the finger at challenges in training skilled workers for advanced manufacturing jobs. Recent cuts to college programs are causing fewer graduates to enter the field while experienced workers retire.
The report also outlines recommended steps to address the current challenges.
The group recommends building a stronger workforce to attract more manufacturers to Ontario, through supporting relevant post-secondary education and encouraging under-represented groups such as women and Indigenous people to pursue a career in manufacturing.
