May 5 is Red Dress Day, a National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S).
Two events are being held locally to raise awareness.
The second annual Red Dress Walk of Awareness will take place Sunday, May 4 on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.
The walk will depart from the Karonhiak’takie Sports Complex at 10:30 a.m. and make its way to the administration building.
On Monday, May 5, there will be a walk through downtown Belleville and a vigil in honour of those who have been lost and who are still missing.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at Empire Square.
Drums and rattles are welcomed at both walks.
Red Dress Day was first commemorated in 2010, inspired by the REDress Project by Métis artist Jaime Black.
Black gathered and hung hundreds of empty, red dresses in public spaces to represent missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
