Quinte West City Council approved a recommendation to add additional funds to the west-end watermain loop in the 2024 budget.
The watermain loop, which was tendered and constructed in 2023/2024, loops on 2nd Dug Hill Road from Walmart Tower to Telephone Road.
It currently services the subdivisions of Telephone Road through a connection to the Telephone Road watermain at Tate Road and also includes a pressure-reducing valve station in proximity to Orchard Lane.
A report to council outlines that there were significant challenges that were found during construction that were not known at the time of tendering for the project.
Those challenges led to additional project costs which resulted in the project exceeding the previously allocated budget.
Most of the additional costs were caused by unknown geotechnical conditions within the underlying soils.
This led to an increase in the west-end watermain loop project from $7,098,000 to $8,085,595, an increase of $987,595.
The project has since been completed.
