The City of Belleville’s Planning Committee has recommended to city council that they approve an amendment to the official plan that would make way for four units as of right or “fourplexes.”
The amendment is part of the city’s Residential Intensification Project.
It calls for the maximum number of accessory dwelling units to increase to three, leading to four units as of right. (One main-unit dwelling and three accessory-unit dwellings.)
Councillor Chris Malette asked about parking on the lot, asking if there would be an allowance for extended driveways to allow for more parking spots.
Director of Engineering and Development Services Stephen Ashton answered yes.
“Are we providing for parking on the lot? Yes,” Ashton replied. “We’re also, from a design perspective, allowing for parking in the rear of the buildings to sort of maintain the streetscape as well. So that’s the intention of the by-law.”
Councillor Paul Carr also commented on the amendment.
“Obviously this is linked to the Housing Accelerator funds that the city just received, $10.4 million from the federal government,” Councillor Carr told the committee.
“When we get into this residential intensification project, Councillor Malette’s point about parking, but also in terms of design, (it is) to make sure it complements the existing neighborhood. So that’s a key feature with some of these policies here.”
The recommendation will be brought forward to city council at a future meeting.
