Northumberland OPP responded to a weapons incident at Campbellford District High School on Tuesday.
Police arrived shortly after 12:10 p.m. after a report of a student in possession of weapons including a firearm.
The school went into lockdown and officers were able to take one person into custody.
Officers were also able to seize the weapons.
Police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
There is no threat to public safety and the school is no longer in lockdown.
The following letter was sent to students families and guardians:
Dear Campbellford District High School Families,
The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of a very concerning incident that occurred at the school today.
During the lunch hour we received a report that a student had made threatening comments towards the school and had weapons in their backpack. Immediately upon becoming aware of this information, the student was brought to the school office and the school entered into a lockdown. Ontario Provincial Police were also immediately contacted to support our response to this incident.As part of our investigation, the student was found to have a small number of weapons including a firearm on their possession. Police were able to secure the weapons and remove the student from the school. Police conducted a sweep of the school and the lockdown was lifted.We appreciate that this situation is very concerning for students, families and staff. KPR staff follow the direction of local police services during a serious occurrence. To ensure everyone’s safety, we do not typically share communication while responding to situations, unless specifically instructed by the police.We will have Mental Health Clinicians on site tomorrow to support students in processing the incident. If parents feel their child could benefit from further supports, please contact the office.We take student safety very seriously, and we appreciate the cooperation of students and staff as we responded to this incident.As always, the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority.
