Fire forced the temporary evacuation of a landmark building in downtown Picton early Monday morning.
Firefighters were called out at 12:20 a.m. after an alarm sounded at the Royal Hotel on Main Street.
Staff and guests evacuated and crews quickly extinguished a fire in the basement of the hotel, first opened in 1879 and recently renovated.
One person was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The cause is unknown but is not considered suspicious. The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called to help with the investigation.
Damage is estimated at $80,000.
