A new initiative for Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings kicks off this weekend.
The first “Hammering Hope” Shed Build will happen Saturday outside Habitat for Humanity and the Belleville ReStore on Bell Boulevard.
Habitat’s Director of Construction Chris Ellerton says volunteers will come together to build a 10 ft by 10 ft garden shed in one day.
“That garden shed is going to basically be either auctioned or sold off eventually to support our future builds.”
Ellerton hopes they will eventually be able hold several builds a year.
“This type of build is also a safer option for volunteers and potential Habitat homeowners who must complete volunteer hours before moving into their home.”
“Traditionally, we used to have volunteers build on our build sites, but the way insurance companies and stuff are nowadays their risk aversion is getting a little iffy with having volunteers onsite and injuries. So to mitigate that risk we decided that we’ll do a smaller scale build that can still keep the public involved.”
Ellerton says several businesses have donated to the day which will include lunch, including RONA Trenton, Vanderlaan Building Products, Starbucks Trenton, Firehouse Subs, Foxboro Fasteners and Milwaukee Tools.
Participants are still welcome to join Saturday’s build.
Register at the Belleville ReStore (365 Bell Boulevard) for a $20 donation (donation receipt provided).
