Prince Edward County has given a $4.5 million donation to Back the Build after receiving an update on the campaign’s progress towards funding the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, Shannon Couli, executive director for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation, along with chair of the Back the Build campaign Nancy Parks, delivered a progress update on the plans for the new hospital.
During the presentation, it was revealed that the campaign had raised $23,000,000 of the $30,000,000 target for local funding contribution. The total cost of the project will be $153.8 million.
They also discussed some of the design elements for the planned hospital, with a focus on sustainability. Part of their plans to reduce the environmental impact is to use a mass timber frame made of treated wood instead of a traditional steel and concrete structure. The timber frame is net carbon negative, and will reduce the overall impact of construction on the environment.
Other green initiatives in the structure include solar panels, a green roof, geothermal energy systems, and charging for electric vehicles.
Once the presentation was over, Mayor Steve Ferguson presented them with the donation, to honour a previous commitment to support the project.
