Today Monday September 30 is National Truth and Reconciliation Day, a federal holiday and a day of reflection and education on the harms done to children and their families in the Indian Residential School System.
Starting in the late 1800s, native children were taken from their families and put into the schools which were sanctioned by the Canadian government and mostly run by Christian churches.
The last such school closed in 1996.
This morning at 11 o’clock the public is invited to a special event in Belleville’s Market Square featuring guest speakers including Chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and residential school survivor Wilbur Maracle.
There will be musical performances as well.
