Hastings County Council is not giving up on having the provincial government set and enforce regulations regarding the keeping of exotic animals.
Thursday, county council passed a special resolution asking the province to enact legislation restricting the possession, breeding and use of non-native wild animals and license zoos.
The issue in Hastings County first came to light four years ago when a small zoo was built north of Bancroft near Maynooth. Highland Hastings did not have the tools at the time to deal with the facility.
While municipalities can enact their own exotic animal by-laws there are still loopholes that can be exploited by those wanting to keep non-native species.
Ontario is the only province that does not regulate exotic animals.
