The Ontario Provincial Police again warn people, especially seniors, to be on guard against online scams.
Police say that late last week, an 84-year-old Marmora and Lake woman saw a pop-up on her computer screen warning that her computer had been compromised. A voice also issued the same warning and her computer froze.
The pop-up contained a phone number which she called and ended up speaking to a self-identified “technician” for hours who eventually had her open her online bank account.
Later she discovered money had disappeared from her accounts and called the OPP.
Anyone seeing such pop-ups and warnings should immediately turn their computer off.
This kind of scam is not uncommon.
