There was a ground-breaking ceremony for the Napanee Battery Energy Storage System on Tuesday.
On hand for the ceremony were Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Electrification Stephen Lecce, MPP for Hastings–Lennox and Addington Ric Bresee, mayor of the Town of Greater Napanee Terry Richardson, and other elected representatives.
A release from the office of Stephen Lecce states that it is the first grid-connected battery project in Hastings–Lennox and Addington and among one of the largest in eastern Ontario.
The project is a joint venture between Atura Power and Ameresco Canada that will provide 250 megawatts of power and is located next to Atura Power’s Napanee Generating Station.
Construction will involve local contractors, including 72 Ontario-made transformers from Aboriginal power supplier Nbisiing Power and is expected to create up to 80 jobs.
The system is expected to be operational by the summer of 2026.
