Barbara Whelan, whose paintings can be found in private and corporate collections around Canada and abroad, passed away Monday.
She was 96.
Whelan had a successful career as an artist, art teacher and organizer and was a founding member of the Belleville Art Association, Burlington Fine Arts and Gallery 121, as well as a long standing member of East Central Ontario Art Association and the Quinte Arts Council.
After repurposing an old school house in Ameliasburgh for an artist’s workspace in the early 1970s she started “Art on the Fence” an outdoor art and craft show which successfully ran for 30 years.
Two of her paintings depicting the Quinte area were gifted to Belleville’s twin cities of Lahr, Germany and Gunpo, South Korea.
In 2003 Whelan received the “Arts Recognition Award” from the City of Belleville for her long standing support and contribution to the community.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 13th from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, September 14th at 11:00 am.
