Change is on the horizon for how Prince Edward County handles recycling.
During Thursday’s meeting of Committee of the Whole, changes were approved for recycle collection in the county to comply with new provincial regulations.
Recycle collection is moving from a municipal funded to a produced funded model, with the change set for July of 2025. Because of this, recycle collection at the curb will be limited to eligible sources.
Single family homes, seasonal dwellings, multi-unit residential buildings, schools, and some long-term care homes will be eligible for pick-up.
Commercial, industrial and municipal buildings are not considered eligible under the new model.
In order to handle waste from non-eligible sources, the county is preparing to open waste drop-off sites more often. Drop-off locations at the Wellington and Sophiahsburgh waste transfer sites will be open on Wednesdays.
Overall, the new system is expected to save the municipality $890,700.
The committee voted to approve the changes, and sent them on to council for final approval.
