With the smell of fall in the air, many local rinks are preparing for the upcoming season, however, one town will be without its ice surface for at least the next couple of months.
The Dr. Hamilton Crawford Memorial Centre Arena in Marmora remains closed with no firm date of when the ice might be ready.
It was to open September 1.
The delay does not impact any bookings or upcoming social events at the Community Centre upstairs.
A recent statement on the Marmora and Lake website indicated the arena’s opening has been delayed and that the municipality is working hard to restore services as quickly as possible.
Mayor Jan O’Neill tells Quinte News that there are some operating requirements necessary to open the arena, including having qualified staff and that the decision will be reconsidered in November.
On Thursday the municipality shared a job posting for a Manager of Parks, Recreation & Facilities.
In other news regarding the arena and community centre, a significant capital project is now underway as Fitzgibbon Construction has begun stripping the existing parking lot in preparation for the new pavement.

Our arena is a source of pride, and we know our community our minor hockey associations, along with many visitors from around our area, rely on the prompt opening of the arena every year and take advantage of the ice to play hockey, skate, stay active and have fun.
We are working hard to restore services as quickly as possible. We hope this delay will be short-term. We will keep our website up to date if there are any changes.
We ask that you please offer patience and understanding with municipal staff as we figure out next steps and timing.
