With the region under a rainfall warning, Environment Canada says as much as 75 mm of rain could fall in some areas by later Friday.
Meteorologist Kevin Williams says about 6 mm of rain had fallen by early this morning.
He adds the rain, possibly including a thunderstorm, will be at its heaviest around mid-morning and continue until this evening.
“The remnants of Hurricane Debby, centred early this morning in Northern Virginia, will come northeast. It will result in periods of heavy rain in our area today into early this evening. Enough rain to produce areas of localized flooding before we see a nice drying process heading toward tonight and tomorrow.”
Lower Trent and Quinte Conservation has issued Water Safety Statements in light of the forecast.
And a new rainfall record could be set today.
The current record for August 9 is 30.5 mm which fell in 1943.
Rainfall Warning in effect for:
- Belleville – Quinte West – Eastern Northumberland County
Heavy rain today.
Hazards: Rain at times heavy. Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 75 mm, with locally higher amounts possible.

Discussion: A low pressure system interacting with the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby is expected to give heavy rainfall for eastern Ontario today. Rain will taper off later this morning.
