To sports fans in the Quinte area he was simply known as BOM.
And for 16 years the sports pages of the Intelligencer were his domain.
Longtime Intelligencer Sports Editor, then City Editor, Brian O’Meara passed away Tuesday evening following an illness.
O’Meara was Sports Editor from 1976 to 1992. His BOM notes were a must-read for local sports enthusiasts and participants as they would scour his column in search of their name or that of a loved one or friend. Often they didn’t like what they would read as Brian took liberal license to have fun at one’s expense (including this writer).
However, O’Meara and cub reporter Ady Vos reported on the news and sports accomplishments of area athletes, schools, and organizations in a manner that unfortunately no longer exists in most newspapers, particularly those in smaller communities.
