A 47-year-old man was arrested following a four-hour standoff in Belleville Wednesday.
Police were called to an apartment on Mary Street around 10:30 a.m. to assist with the eviction of a tenant.
The male occupant of the residence refused to leave and armed himself with a hatchet and knife when officers started speaking to him.
Police officers, police negotiators and the mental health worker from the Integrated Mobile Police and Co-Response Team spoke with the male in an attempt to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. after negotiations failed, members of the Emergency Response Unit deployed a conductive energy weapon and arrested the man on charges of mischief, assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.
The accused, who sustained minor injuries, was held for a bail hearing on Thursday.
The Belleville Police Service thanks community members in the area of the incident for their patience and understanding while this situation unfolded.
