In addition to Avril Lavigne, three residents of this region are among the 83 latest appointees to the Order of Canada.
Judy Kent of Picton, Colborne’s Michael Perley and Mark Joseph Cameron of Hastings have each been named Members of the Order.
Kent is the first woman to serve as both president of Commonwealth Sport Canada and Canada’s chef de mission for the Commonwealth Games.
She has also ardently promoted gender equality and inclusion.
Her seminal paper on sport for international development laid the framework for the creation of the SportWORKS program.
In addition, Kent was also lead facilitator of Generations for Peace.
Perley has been recognized for devoting his life’s work to addressing serious environmental and health challenges.
At the helm of the Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco, he advocated for tighter laws to reduce tobacco use and limit second-hand smoke.
Perley also spearheaded coalitions on acid rain and air pollution that led to significant legislative changes in Canada and the United States.
Cameron is a humanitarian, educator and former paramedic dedicated to advancing paramedicine and disaster response education.
He is associate director of the Sunnybrook Advanced Life Support and Trauma Education program, which specializes in courses for cardiac, pediatric and trauma life support.
Cameron co-founded the Canadian International Medical Relief Organization and the Critical Incident Management Response Organization.
The Order of Canada recognizes people from all walks of life who have made significant and sustained contributions to the country.
Since its creation in 1967—Canada’s centennial year—more than 7,600 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
