Ontario Provincial Police say one of the vehicles involved in a head-on collision on the west side of Kingston early Tuesday afternoon was travelling the wrong way on Highway 401.
Emergency crews responded early in the afternoon after two SUVs collided in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 west of Gardiners Road.
Police originally said the vehicle that was driving the wrong way collided with a transport, but updated the information late Tuesday afternoon.
Two people were initially transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
OPP say one driver remains in critical condition while the other has been upgraded and injuries are no longer considered life-threatening.
A child in one of the vehicles was not seriously hurt but was transported to hospital.
The eastbound lanes of the highway are closed starting at Odessa and are expected to remain so until about 7:30 p.m.
Highway 2 east between Odessa and Kingston is experiencing heavy traffic as a result of the closure.
