The City of Belleville is going to make a splash when it comes to water infrastructure.
At Monday night’s council meeting, members approved a staff recommendation to do an inspection of the concrete watermain for the municipality. The Primary Transmission Concrete
Watermain is massive, 600 millimetres, or about two feet across.
The successful bidder was Pure Technologies Ltd. for $852,740 (plus HST).
Councillor Garnet Thompson asked Director of Environmental Services Perry Decola if this type of inspection would be able to catch a major malfunction, similar to the recent watermain break in Calgary.
Decola says absolutely.
“So we’ll be doing five kilometres of the primary transmission main down Sidney Street, College Street towards Olive Street, to do a full in-line live inspection. So the system will be fully operational, we do not have to take it out of service.”
Decola says it falls perfectly in line with the focus of the Asset Management Plan, which was also presented to council on Monday. CLICK HERE FOR THAT STORY
“We’ll know things like wall thicknesses, valve condition, band strength, band condition, whether there’s broken bands, air gaps, risers. It’s a heck of a piece of information.
The watermain in question was installed in the 1960s.
