Brighton council has approved a pay increase for itself.
A consultant’s study found that remuneration for council members was well below average when compared to communities of similar size.
Following council’s approval, the mayor’s pay will rise to $38,519 a year, up from just over $34,000, the deputy mayor will receive $27,404, an increase from $26,700, and councillor remuneration goes up to $22,818 from $17,828.
The increases put Brighton in the middle of the pack when it comes to remuneration in comparison with similar municipalities.
The mayor and council in Brighton will also be receiving a new benefit.
Earlier this week council voted to approve an annual health spending account for itself, giving members up to $2,000 a year to cover medical and dental expenses.
Health spending accounts are becoming more popular in municipal government and not long ago
Prince Edward County council voted to approve such accounts, but for $1,000 a year.
The County also approved payments to members of council to cover caregiver costs for close family members so they can attend council/committee meetings.
