Residents flooded the Quinte West council chambers for another chance to have their concerns heard about a new group home.
During Wednesday’s council meeting, a series of members of the public gave comment on a proposed zoning change for the former Orchard View Baptist Church. St. Leonard’s Community Support is seeking a zoning change to allow the operation of a 10-bed group home for youth at the former church site.
Youth referred to the shelter would have a place to live while they work with staff onsite to develop life skills needed for independent living and also attend high school or college to fill gaps in their education.
While the property is already zoned for residential use, which includes group homes, the zoning change would allow the facility to offer temporary emergency shelter for youth.
The issue first came before the Planning Advisory Committee in March, and was then deferred to the April 18 meeting. Once approved by the committee during the April meeting, the decision went to council for final approval.
Several residents voiced concerns about the new shelter, with common complaints being the potential for crime and a reduction in safety for surrounding residents due to the presence of the youth in the community. The crowd of residents packed the seating area in the council chamber.
Councillor Karen Sharpe was supportive of the application.
“There is a great need to assist them,” said Councillor Sharpe. “There are youth that are abused, youth that just need a place to stay and be warm, so they can be stronger, get opportunity, and change their life in some ways.”
After hearing the concerns of the residents, council approved the rezoning application as it had been sent to them by the Planning Advisory Committee.
