The Belleville Spirits Girls U19 team won a gold medal this weekend at the Ontario Basketball Association’s Provincial Basketball Tournament held at the Toronto Pan Am Centre.
The girls competed in the top OBLX division and beat out a tough competitor from London 43-40 in a nail-biter finish to capture the club’s first ever OBLX gold medal.
The Spirits were ranked fifth in Ontario heading into the weekend.
They lost to the number one ranked London squad on Friday night, but turned it around and beat the North Toronto Huskies, Blessed Sacrament from Hamilton 58-53, and the Barrie Royals 45-40 before taking the gold in their rematch to London.
OBLX is the highest rank of basketball the Ontario Basketball League offers.
