Leeward House, a transitional housing facility for the homeless, was officially opened in Prince Edward County Tuesday.
The home, located in the former Maples of Picton retirement home on County Road 5, is the first of its kind in the County and will move nine people directly from homelessness to a supported congregate living environment with on-site staff.
Residents will receive programs, services, and supports they require as they move toward permanent, sustainable housing.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Steve Ferguson said Leeward House’s welcoming environment will ensure a safe and supportive space for people experiencing homelessness and help reduce pressures on emergency and community services.
The property was purchased by Base31 but the home will be run by the municipality with staffing costs and operating expenses covered by funds provided by the province to Prince Edward – Lennox and Addington Social Services (PELASS) through the Homelessness Prevention Program.
The five current tenants at The Maples have been supported by County staff and the owners of the retirement home as they move to other housing.
