It is a major milestone in the history of Canada’s military.
April 1, 2024 marks 100 years of service for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a distinct military element.
Banners are hanging across Quinte West to celebrate the anniversary.
So far, 48 commemorative banners have been hung on street poles around downtown Trenton and Frankford as part of the 413 Wing Air Force Association of Canada’s 100 Banners for 100 Years project,
Each banner features a photo of an Air Force veteran, their trade, and the name of the banner sponsor, set on a blue background.
“The RCAF has been loyal to innovation, excellence and serving the nation over the past 100 years,” said Jo-Anne Peckham, chair of 413 (Air Force City) Wing. “The 100 Banners for 100 Years project offers the community an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the RCAF and the sacrifices of those who have served. 413 (Air Force City) Wing is honoured to work with the City of Quinte West and other organizations to recognize this important Canadian milestone.”
“The marking of the RCAF 100th anniversary is a significant milestone in Canadian history, and for Quinte West as an Air Force city,” says Mayor Jim Harrison. “I encourage everyone to come out and see the RCAF banners, attend the many anniversary events in Quinte West this year, and continue to support the brave service people who serve our country.”
Quinte West Council has approved that the honour of the ‘Freedom of the City’ be bestowed on the members and personnel of RCAF Trenton and their veterans, to mark the 100th anniversary.
This honour will be presented as part of the RCAF Celebration, Parade and Flag-Raising Ceremony, a community event, to be held in Trenton on Sunday, April 7.
