A Belleville police Constable will be sentenced on an assault charge Thursday at the Quinte Consolidated Courthouse.
Constable Jeffrey Smith was found guilty of a 2019 arrest of Tyendinaga Territory man Mario Baptiste Jr. at Taco Bell on North Front Street in Belleville.
During the arrest three officers responded with Baptiste Jr. ending up being taken down to the floor and suffering a minor hand injury.
Constable Paul Fyke was also charged but found not guilty. Another officer, Constable Kyle Dodds, had charges against him withdrawn.
Baptiste Jr. has launched a $550,000 civil lawsuit against the Belleville Police Service and several officers.
