Quinte West Planning and Advisory Committee has approved a zoning request to allow a new 13-storey apartment building project to go ahead.
The approval came during their Thursday meeting, after a brief presentation by the developer and municipal staff.
The tower is planned for construction on the properties of 41, 47 and 57 Stella Crescent. While 41 and 47 Stella Crescent are currently empty land, the property at 57 is occupied by a paved parking lot and the Heroes Landing banquet centre. That building will be demolished making way for the high rise.
The 13-storey tower will feature 246 units and is of a higher density than the original zoning the property would allow. While the original zoning would allow for an apartment building, it would be limited to nine floors, and fewer units on the floors to meet density limits.
Councillor Zack Card supported approving the zoning change.
“I think that Qunite West is in dire need of purpose-built rentals and an even more dire need of affordable housing in general,” said Councillor Card. “I look forward to them breaking ground and getting those units occupied.”
The zoning application was approved by the committee, and forwarded to council for final approval.
