New technology tracking the existence of the short-term accommodation business in Brighton appears to be working.
The so-called web crawling software has identified 28 short-term accommodation operations but at first many hadn’t yet complied with Brighton’s new Short-Term Accommodation By-law and weren’t licensed.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says 61 enforcement letters were sent to the businesses and for the most part they worked.
“We don’t want to be wasting the court’s time and we certainly don’t want to be wasting our one by-law enforcement officer’s time going to court when we know we can probably get compliance more quickly and certainly more effectively just by asking people to please just sign up.”
However, five penalty notices were issued since the by-law came into effect with a total of $10,000 dollars in fines being issued for advertising without a licence and $50,000 worth of fines for operating without a licence.
