Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is reporting another week of an increase in suspected drug-related deaths in the region.
The health unit says the increase took place during the week of March 9.
This alert gets sent out when there are two or more suspected drug-related deaths in a week.
It is the second time this alert has been sent out by the health unit this year, with the first alert coming during the week of February 26 to March 1.
HPEPH is once again warning of a toxic and volatile local supply of unregulated drugs in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.
They have provided the following steps to those who are taking drugs to reduce the risk of overdose.
- Don’t use drugs alone.
- Have a plan. Ask a person you trust to stay with you or check on you.
- Start with a small amount to see how you react.
- Always carry one or more naloxone kits.
The health unit says using drugs alone can significantly increase the risk of drug poisoning that leads to death. If you must use alone, use an overdose prevention service such as the National Overdose Response Service by calling 1-888-688-NORS (6677).
