Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is reporting an increase in suspected drug-related deaths during the week of February 26 to March 1.
While no specific number was given, the health unit says it sends out an alert when there are two or more drug-related deaths in one week.
HPEPH continues to warn of a toxic and volatile local supply of unregulated drugs.
The health unit provided the following steps to reduce the risk of an overdose:
- Don’t use drugs alone.
- Have a plan. Ask a person who you trust to stay with you or check on you.
- Start with a small amount to see how you react.
- Always carry one or more naloxone kits.
While the health unit urges not to use drugs alone, if you must use them alone, you are asked to use an overdose prevention service such as the National Overdose Response Service by calling 1-888-688-NORS (6677).
