Firefighters remained on scene at an auto recycler on Guffin Lane late Friday afternoon battling a blaze Quinte West Fire Chief John Whalen called a dirty and difficult fire.
Whalen says multiple 9-1-1 calls came in around 4 p.m. about a fire at Belleville Auto Recovery Inc.on Guffin Lane in the area of Baptist Church Road and Halloway Road.
Heavy black smoke could be seen rolling across the sky.
“So multiple cars on fire, tires on fire, trees and brush on fire. My first on-scene commander called in another station so this was Tucker’s Corners that responded. And then our Station 7 responded from Frankford and then we brought in Stirling-Rawdon to help us and we’ve got about 35 firefighters on scene and we’re just getting it under control right now.”
Whalen says high winds and dry conditions made it difficult for firefighters and there were several explosions.
He estimates 12 to 15 cars were on fire but there are about 150 on the property.
There have been no injuries.
The cause is under investigation.
