The Municipality of Brighton will be creating closer ties with a community in France.
Monday, council supported a Councillor Emily Rowley motion to twin with the village of Anisy.
Anisy was liberated from the Germans during the Second World War on D-Day 80 years ago by Canada’s Queen’s Own Rifles regiment.
Mayor of Brighton Brian Ostrander says there’s an important local connection to that event.
“Unfortunately Clarke Lawson of Brighton perished during the fighting that day 80 years ago. The good folks of Anisy named a road after Clarke so Rue Clarke Lawson is there in Anisy, France.”
The 80th anniversary of D-Day will be commemorated June 6. The Queen’s Own Rifles will be returning to France to mark the occasion.
Anisy is a village with a population of under 1,000.
