The Invasive Species Centre is holding an information session on Grass Carp, an invasive fish species recently found in local waters.
The information session is being held at the Belleville Fish and Game Club at 170 Elmwood Drive, on Wednesday at 6pm.
Grass Carp are an invasive fish species threatening to invade the Great Lakes and their proximity makes them an immediate threat to Canadian waters. With voracious appetites consuming up to 40% of their body weight a day in aquatic plants, Grass Carp would have serious negative impacts to biodiversity, the Great Lakes economy, and activities like recreational fishing.
The session will have information booths from the Invasive Species Centre, the Federation of Ontario Cottagers Association, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Blue Fish Canada, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the Fish’n Canada Show.
A presentation will be given by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, followed by a question and answer period from a panel of experts. Food and refreshments will be provided.
