A former fishing shack that houses Barn Swallows at Point Traverse in Prince Edward County has been torn down by the Canadian Wildlife Service.
A group of concerned Prince Edward County residents had been lobbying the federal government to save the five sheds which had been part of a former fishing village, especially the one that is an annual nesting site for a handful of Barn Swallow pairs.
Cheryl Anderson says she arrived at the site late Tuesday morning to find the building demolished.
“They did say that they would try to save the boards with the nests and install them in an alternate nesting structure. Unfortunately they have not saved anything. My only hope is that the Canadian Wildlife Service will do what they said they would do and that is to install an alternate nesting structure before the swallows come back which will be in about one month.”
Anderson says the swallows could find a nesting place under the dock if the water isn’t too high but their time to make a new nest is limited.
Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams issued a statement Monday saying Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault continues to ignore the concerns of residents of Prince Edward County.
