It appears 2024 is picking up right where 2023 left off for the Trenton Care and Share Food Bank.
Manager Jen Koornneef says earlier this month they had the busiest single day for visitors in the food bank’s history.
She says due to the demand they will be opening in the evenings on the first and third Thursday of each month.
“Yes, we have to increase our capacity, but the important thing to remember is that the high cost of living in our area and across our province makes it so difficult for many people to afford food and essentials.”

She says there is no one type of person hit by food insecurity. This is a problem across all walks of life.
“We’re seeing people who are forced to make many difficult decisions about what bills get paid, as they deal with unaffordable housing and rising food prices. Just because someone has a full-time job, doesn’t mean they’re food secure.”
Koornneef says that their hours of 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. do not work for everyone, so not only are the new hours needed to meet demand, but to provide residents with added flexibility to visit the food bank
Their hours on the first and third Thursdays will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
From 2022 to 2023, the Trenton Care and Share Food Bank saw a 44 per cent increase.
