The Belleville Senators slipped past the Rochester Americans in a nail biting 2-1 shootout victory on Friday night.
Zack MacEwen scored in regulation play, while both Rourke Chartier and Matthew Highmore scored in the shootout.
Neither team found the back of the net in a deadlocked first period before the Rochester Americans opened scoring midway through the second. The Senators came back to tie the game in the final frame, and the teams remained neck in neck through overtime.
During the shootout, Rourke Chartier scored first but an Americans goal kept the shootout going, until Matthew Highmore got in a second goal, and without a matching goal from the Americans, handed them the loss.
Belleville Sens goaltender Kevin Mandolese, who came in during the second fame to relieve starting goaltender Mads Sogaard, said that coming in as a relief goaltender doesn’t change how he plays.
“You definitely don’t have time to think, you just go in there and try to help the team make a comeback and win the game,” said Mandolese. “I think the guys did a great job on penalty kills, because we had a few to kill there, but it was fun to play in that game.”
The Belleville Senators are still on the road, facing the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night. The puck drops at 7.
