The Northumberland Land Trust has announced a major acquisition of land south of Campbellford.
The land trust will create a new reserve with the 100 acres of land on the Trent River and the Murray Marsh Corridor at the mouth of Percy Creek.
The extremely biodiverse region contains 1,200 metres of well-vegetated shoreline on Percy Creek and is home to a variety of plants and animals, several of which are classified as species at risk.
Northumberland Land Trust President Rob Kennedy says the land was largely agricultural but that owner Robert de Lint has been ensuring its environmental values were protected and enhanced.
Over the last several decades de Lint has restored the forested drumlin, stabilized the creek bank with a vegetated buffer and maintained the grasslands through light cattle grazing.
He began donating the land several years ago.
A formal celebration of the acquisition will be held in April.
This is the 14th property to come under the land trust’s care.
