If Hastings County council gives final approval, Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services could be operating an ambulance on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory seven days a week, 24 hours a day, by this fall.
At a meeting Wednesday, the county’s Emergency Services Committee will be asked to recommend council approve signing off on an eight-year agreement with the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte to provide ambulance services.
The initiative would involve almost $900,000 in startup costs and $2.3 million in operating costs for the 2024 year.
It’s hoped the ambulance will operate out of the Mohawk Fire Hall and be in service by September.
As in other areas the ambulance will respond to emergencies outside of the Territory as needed.
Eventually it’s hoped the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte will operate its own paramedic service.
