A Belleville councillor says the organization representing rural municipalities is stepping up the pressure on the provincial government to start spending more money on healthcare.
Councillor Sean Kelly told council rural Ontario municipalities paid $481 million last year paying for healthcare services, services which should be the responsibility of the provincial government.
Kelly said too many people have to do without proper medical care.
“Twenty-seven thousand people in Hastings County do not have access to primary care so when council works with the Nurse Practitioners and we bring on two today that’s positive news.”
Information from the Rural Ontario Municipal Association showed that 65 per cent of respondents to a survey did not have access to a walk-in clinic in rural communities.
