Brighton Council has deferred approving a raise for council members.
At its meeting Monday, council asked for a staff report to be provided at the February 20 meeting with a by-law likely to come forward again for consideration in March.
Mayor Brian Ostrander says a compensation review revealed remunerations for Brighton’s council are significantly lower than other municipalities and councils of similar size.
Ostrander says the proposed remuneration increase would put Brighton in the 50th percentile of similar communities.
He adds the deferral will allow for more discussion and transparency on the issue.
The proposed annual remuneration to be paid to Brighton Council effective January 1, 2024 is:
- Mayor – $39,675
- Deputy Mayor – $28,309
- Councillor – $23,503
