A new rest stop could be on the way for walkers of the Millennium Trail in Prince Edward County.
During Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, Councillor Roy Pennell proposed using some surplus municipal land for the construction of a rest stop for the trail with a small public park.
The proposed site is next to an existing trail access point on Salem Road, near County Road 33. Council had previously directed staff to sever the property and prepare it for sale as surplus.
Councillor Pennell said that adding the rest stop and park would provide additional parkland to surrounding new housing developments.
“I believe by making this a part, it would benefit tourism in the county and will definitely benefit residents in the Consecon area,” said Councillor Pennell.
Councillor Janice Maynard was interested in preserving the now disused grain elevator on the land as a potential historical attraction.
“I’ll support this resolution. It was really kind of what I always foresaw. I did not support the delisting to sell it because I thought it was a valuable piece,” said Councillor Maynard.
Staff were directed by the committee to explore the viability of the project, and return a report on it to council later this year.
