The Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus, of which Quinte communities are members, wants a new financial partnership with the provincial government.
The Caucus is supporting efforts by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario to have the province review and renegotiate how funding is shared with the province’s 144 municipalities.
At issue is the long-held belief by municipalities that the province has been downloading some of the costs it’s responsible involving infrastructure, social housing, child care, social services, and health care on to municipalities.
Municipalities say they are playing close to $4 billion for what should be items and services paid for by the provincial government.
AMO and the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus hope a new deal will be considered in the province’s next budget.
