Sled dog racing is returning to Tweed this year.
The Sled Dog Sport Association of Southern Ontario will be hosting its second sporting event from February 3-4 at Stoco Lake Lodge.
Volunteer Bonnie Sallans says there are different kind of races set to take place including solo, two-dog, four-dog and six-dog sled team races.
She says there will be different breeds of dogs taking part in the races as well.
“Traditionally, it’s the Husky types, Siberian Huskies, there might be a couple of Alaskan Malamutes,” Sallans tells Quinte News.
“You will see more hound-looking dogs which are like Euro Hounds and Greysters they’re called … Border Collies, they’ll sled. Golden Retrievers, there is a Golden Retriever team that comes out sometimes, you’ll just see all kinds of different dogs at these races because people are really into having their dogs run.”
Sallans says any concerns about traffic have been addressed.
“So what you probably saw last year is that there’s one place where the teams have to cross the road,” Sallans says.
“So we usually have a number of volunteers there to make sure that all goes safely. We ask traffic to wait and then when they’re sent through (not to linger) because we want to get them through as quickly as possible before the next team comes along.”
The group is still accepting participants for the dog sled event and is also encouraging people to help volunteer for the event.
“The best places to be a spectator are as a volunteer because you get to go out on the trail and help make sure everybody does all right as they make corners and things like that,” Sallans tells Quinte News.
