The Ministry of Transportation Ontario has determined that a roundabout is the preferred solution to the improvement project at the intersection of Highway 62 and County Road 1 in Prince Edward County.
During Wednesday’s planning committee meeting, a presentation was made to council members by MTO staff, detailing the study the ministry had undertaken on the intersection as part of redesigning the junction.
The intersection has been recognized as dangerous after a large number of crashes involving personal injury occurred there. The majority of accidents involving injuries occurred during left turns.
Multiple options were considered, with the second place solution being a four-way intersection with traffic lights and dedicated left turn lanes. The roundabout was found by the study to be a safer option for drivers, as it limits the potential for accidents and reduces the speed of vehicles, resulting in less severe accidents.
Council received the presentation, but took no action at this time.
A public information centre on proposed intersection improvements is planned to be held at the Wellington and District Community Centre on January 25.
