New transitional housing for the homeless is being made available in Prince Edward County.
During Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council members approved a resolution to fund and support a transitional housing support on the site of a former retirement home in Sophiasburgh.
The retirement home, known as The Maples, is currently at 50% capacity. Existing residents are receiving support by both the retirement home owners and municipal staff to secure new housing.
The transitional housing facility is being named Leeward House, and will have one full-time staff member funded by the Homelessness Prevention Program, and an on-site caretaker. The facility will support housing for nine people in a group setting.
The plans for the home were approved unanimously, and forwarded to council for final approval.
