The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus, representing 13 municipalities in this part of the province, continues to push the federal and provincial governments to support its 7 in 7 housing plan.
Now in existence for over a year, the 7 in 7 plan involves the construction of 28,000 rental units, 7,000 of them to be affordable, over a seven-year period.
Stirling-Rawdon Mayor and Hastings County Warden Bob Mullin says the plan needs money from all three levels of government or nothing will happen.
“There’s been lots of talk about needing to build them but no one has actually put money on the table and some of the proposals that have come out are aimed at cities not rural Ontario.”
Members of the Wardens’ Caucus will be discussing the plan with provincial cabinet ministers at this weekend’s Rural Ontario Municipal Association’s Conference in Toronto.
The 7 in 7 plan would not only involve government but the private sector as well.
Under the $3.1 billion plan, just over 1,400 affordable units would be built in Hastings County, 289 in Lennox and Addington, and 156 in Prince Edward County.
