We have an update on the “Coleman Castle” situation.
The process of tearing down the stately 151-year-old building has begun.
About half the structure was reduced to a pile of rubble by mid-morning Thursday.
The owners, the Rushnell family of Rushnell Funeral Homes, had obtained a demolition permit from the city and according to Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis have plans to build as many as 200 apartments on the property.
The building was vacant and had most recently served as a funeral home and chapel.
The “Coleman Castle” on North Front Street was not on the city’s heritage registry and was not a designated heritage site.
